Blu-ray also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of new optical disc format jointly developed by Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) in 2006.
Blu-ray Disc is a digital optical disc and is used for data storage in high amount. Data may be video, audio, photo, etc.
DVD was replaced by the Blu-ray Disc and can store many high definition videos, audios, photos, and ultra-high-definition resolution. It plays a main role for a medium of material like video in feature films and for the video games etc.
It is named “Blu-ray” because of the blue laser used to read the disc, which stores the greater information. It is possible with the DVD using red laser of great wavelength.
Blu-ray disc has two layers each layer having the storage capacity of 25GB, and dual-layer discs have 50GB for feature-length video disc.
Blu-ray disc has the capability of storing the whole back-up of one’s hard drive in just a single disc.
It has much more applications and advantages and used by the consumers everywhere nowadays differently to fulfill their requirements.
Blu-ray VS DVD:
DVD established the foundation for the quest of high-quality TV viewing and listening has develop the Blu-ray. DVD provides a good viewing but, it is not the format of high definition.
Blu-ray single-sided disc can store standard video data of 13 hours while single-sided DVD’s disc can store only 133 minutes of standard video data.
Blu-ray disc and the DVD disc both have the same thickness of (1.2 millimeters) but have differs in data storage capability.
Image is displayed in more depth by the Blu-ray while DVD does not display the image in so much depth to the consumer.
Blu-ray discs are not playable in CD and DVD’s players because they don’t have blue-violet laser required for the reading of Blu-ray discs. However, the Blu-ray disc player can play both formats disc easily.
Blu-ray has the higher rate of data transferring of 36 Mbps while the DVD have the transferring speed of 10 Mbps. Recording materials on the 25GB Blu-ray disc can take an hour and a half.
Types of Blu-ray Disc:

- Blu-ray Disc Recordable (BD-R):
BD recordable discs are good for CD-Rs and DVD-Rs and they can all be written once only, but BD-R discs are readable in a larger number of players.
Now currently single-layer having 25GB and dual-layer having 50GB are available on the market having a price of $2 to $5 the single-layer and of $12 to $20 the dual-layer per disc.
- Blu-ray Disc Rewritable (BD-RE):
BD-RE are comparable to CD-RWs and DVD-RWs, from the time when they allow you to record and erase multiple times the data from the same disc.
Nowadays only 25GB of BD-RE disc are available on the market but the larger size of disc will be available soon in the market.

Consumers demanded to record their own videos by the advent of first HD camcorder.
So, consumers can now record their home videos for the first time with the quality unlike any before. The recorded Disc can be stored safely for many years, without any tape wear risk.
- BD Having Mass Data Storage:
Nowadays due to the growing of broadband connections consumers are downloading large amount of data in a high quality.
The personal computer doesn’t have the ability of storing much data and requires commercial storage to store the data.
CD disc have the storage capacity of 650 MB, while the DVD comes and increase the storage capacity up to 5-10x means a DVD disc can store 4.7 to 8.5 GB of data.
But this was also not enough for the users and then the concept of Blu-ray disc comes and fulfill the storage requirement of the consumers. Blu-ray disc increased the storage capacity to 5-10x and provide the 25-50 GB per disc storage.

Due to high storage capacity, low cost of per GB and with high transferring rate of data from one device to another device, Blu-ray disc has been widely adopted across the industry.
Because of high storage capacity, this format is optimized for digital asset management and other professional applications. Think of medical archives which needs high storage for their numerous diagnostic scans in the high resolution.

- Digital rights management like in iTunes Blu-ray will only let a disc to copy certain number of times to help prevent piracy
- All over the world, means the major corporations are already in the support of Blu-ray or are planning to support Blu-ray compatibility for recent and for future technology

- BD is Very Expensive
- High Definition capacity is not a substantial amount even though storage space is great
- Enticing movies titles are selecting Blu-ray will increase in the future but currently, the high price for Blu-ray leaves the technology at a disadvantage
- Not only the technology is expensive, but the Blu-ray discs are also having a higher price as well
